Reverse Engineering Introduction

June 21, 2017

Jay Clegg from Red Tree Labs has done a good bit of reverse engineering over the years, and in this talk he'll discuss the basic techniques and methodology for reverse engineering unknown binary data formats. As a simple example, he'll walk through the entire process he used to reverse engineer the data transmitted by a proprietary of-the-shelf wireless temperature/humidity sensor and extract usable data.

He'll demonstrate how this was done "the hard way", with little more than text editor and a little scripting (mostly python), along with an arduino and a cheap and dirty RF module for data collection. This is a very low-level but relatively simple reverse engineering task and should serve as a good introduction to the process that can be applied to other, more complex, data formats.
